What any successful product development venture needs, is the minds to break the process down not only to definitive resolution of its challenges, but to the best principles for performing whatever processes will best execute those challenges.

Lacking an offer of that vital pathway, I assume either that you are already pursuing such innovative solutions as comprise proprietary innovations, or that you are first wanting the only kind of brainstorming session which will produce the ideal pathway.

So, the problem-solving process is the same for all machine design pursuits; and for my 2 cents, I believe it serves best to envision how we ourselves would best achieve the goals of the pursuit; and to let that hypothetical path predicate the best tools to accomplish each phase of the process.

Having a cat, and understanding the process... (and having designed or having helped design sophisticated machines which successfully tread where none before had ventured)... I believe that unless the pan of your eventual machine is so deep and shaped that these formations can never reach a side or bottom... that reasonably sanitary removal of urine concretions stuck securely to the bottom of your pan will impose enough apparatus requirements itself to make your machine cost preclusive.

On the other hand, a less-fully-automated concept can reasonably separate material from the litter in a separate machine, leaving the chore of cleaning the empty pan to manual processes. Again, having a cat, I have considered and reduced the problem to this practical sense already.

So, I would say a reasonable solution to the few issues imposed would be to develop a low-cost, but yet highly dependable separator. Dump the pan into the separator. Manually clean the pan. allow the pan to dry, and/or dry the pan. Turn the separator on. Separated litter falls into the pan... and waste materials fall into a container from which they are readily transferred to a disposal bag.

Now, if you wanted more or less to clean the pan in a separate process, while this would be quite feasible... we can understand the potential plumbing, heating, pumping, spraying, draining, and drying apparatus that may be required... and the probable costs they may impose upon the project. Delays could be resolved by incorporating two pans... one cycled into the cleaning process... and the other (already cleaned pan) cycled back into more or less immediate use.

Thus resolving the issue of delaying use, we free the separator to the further prospective objects of sanitary treatment of the separated litter.

But this is the kind of breakdown your require to predicate your prospective design forks. They do give you some reasonable idea of the eventual costs of products performing the functions of each prospective path.

But in the end... as it's your daughter's cat... perhaps you should just make _her_ do it.
